Learning A Foreign Language For Reading Literature

Bonus note: Poetry with a rhyming scheme is best read in its original language. For reasons that should be pretty self-evident. Here's the post.

  1. This is really interesting, and I definitely agree with you. I hope to learn more languages myself one day.

    1. Are you learning any languages now? I suppose Spanish would be useful for you, depending upon what part of Texas you're from (if I recall correctly).

    2. Sí.

White people are actually a almost minority where I live, we have more Hispanics and blacks, except in the homeschool and country people groups for some reason. :)

    4. Ah, Latin. I'll probably never pick up Latin, just because I'm focusing mainly on literature from the eighteenth-century on, and one can only be expected to know so much. I know very little Spanish. I'm not a big fan of how it looks written down on the page. Maybe one day.

  2. Oooh I love that post. It's interesting that you're reading it in French, it would definitely take me a while to translate to something I would understand. I'm currently watching a Spanish film as I type this, and would love to spend some time on the mainland so that I could become perfectly fluent. I am also learning Welsh at the moment which I realise is a rather pointless language, but I'm in a very nationalist part of Wales where the locals hate those who can only converse in English and not Welsh, and they keep mistaking me for English which, as you know, would be insulting considering I am from Swansea. I also hear stories of those who have English accents and can only speak English being bottled in pubs and the like, so it's definitely in my best interest to learn the basics.

    1. As I was saying with Gray above, I know almost no Spanish myself. I'm not sure if I'll ever truly be fluent with French, but hopefully I'll be able to read it at a high level and probably write it too. I've learned a few words and phrases in Welsh. It's a really cool language, I think, but I can't really justify spending a lot of time learning it myself. Best of luck with that. Hwyl.
